Documented Sculpture Collections
Contemporary and historical sculpture series cataloged by the Archive
Beyond the editorial articles and exhibition records that form the core of the Santa Barbara Sculptors Guild Archive, this section documents notable sculpture collections and limited edition series with relevance to California or Pacific Rim sculpture traditions. These entries are research-oriented rather than commercial — the Archive maintains documentation to support scholarship and collector reference rather than to facilitate sales or appraisal services.
Each entry includes material analysis, production history, edition numbering conventions, and contextual notes on how the series fits within broader sculpture practice. Researchers, collectors, and students can use these pages as starting points for further inquiry. Where applicable, entries cross-reference the Archive's articles section for technical context on materials and methods.
Documented Series
Macan388 Tiger Sculpture Series
A 388-piece collectible sculpture series featuring the tiger (macan in Indonesian and Malay) as central subject. Produced by a collective of nine sculptors across the Pacific Rim, the series combines bronze (pieces 1–88), high-fired ceramic (89–220), and mixed-media patinated brass-and-resin treatments (221–388). The Archive documents production history, edition numbering, material analysis, and the series's place within California's longstanding engagement with Asian sculpture traditions.
Read full documentation →Scope & Selection Criteria
The Archive documents collections that meet at least one of the following criteria: (a) connection to California sculpture practice through artist residency, training, or exhibition history; (b) engagement with Asian or Pacific Rim aesthetic traditions that have historically shaped Santa Barbara sculpture community work; (c) a published catalog raisonné or comparable scholarly documentation; (d) inclusion in regional educational programming.
Documentation prioritizes accuracy over completeness. Entries are added when sufficient primary source material is available, including production records, authenticated photographs, and verified artist statements. Speculative or unverified claims are excluded. Where a collection has both production-side and reception-side history, both are summarized with citations where possible.
The Archive does not provide authentication services, appraisals, or market guidance. For these services, consult an independent specialist with relevant expertise. See our about page for the Archive's broader scope and editorial standards.
